Hygge (pronounced hue-gah) came second only to ‘Brexit’ as word of the year in the UK in 2016.

The eagled-eyed among you may have spotted the word in the description of Weave a Peg Loom Rug with @BigSkyTextiles workshop, which urges you to ‘Come along to this fun and relaxing workshop to create a soft and special rug to bring a little hygge to your home.’  We’re so up to the minute here at The Blue Room!

So what on earth is it? It’s a Danish word, and although we have no exact equivalent in English, the nearest is ‘a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being’. Think candles, comfy armchair, snuggly blanket, thick socks, hot chocolate, your favourite book or knitting or a lovely notebook and pen and you’re getting there.

We have so many things in The Blue Room (and in our online shop) that are hygge: scented candles, scarves, cushions, mugs, notebooks, socks, everything for knitting, sewing and crochet and of course, hot chocolate and home-made cake available in our tea room!

We like to think all our workshops engender hygge, in that they are relaxing, convivial – sharing the experience with like-minded people – and give you a warm, satisfied glow at the end.  Also lots of our workshops teach you the skills to make things to bring more hygge to your own home: weaving, knitting, crochet, sewing just for starters and, of course, there’s the extra hygge while you are working on the project!  And, we have lots of the materials, haberdashery and notions you’ll need right here in The Blue Room.

And don’t forget our drop-in crafting sessions: Monday Makers (2nd Monday of each month 7pm-9pm), Wednesday Crafternoons (2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month, 1:30pm-3:30pm) and Blue Room Art Group (1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month, 10:30am-12:30pm).

So whether you are thinking of buying something to hype up the hygge at home, take part in a workshop and enjoy the feeling of hygge with others or embark on a project to make something hygge for yourself or as a gift, look no further than our lovely hygge Blue Room!
