Mixed Ability Dressmaking

July 19 @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 7:00pm on Thursday, repeating until August 2, 2018

Four part dressmaking course for all skill levels, from beginners to advanced but stuck, making a garment of your own choosing. This course starts on 5th July and runs for 4 sessions (not meeting 12th July, finishing 2nd August).

In our Dressmaking courses Rachel will help you to create your own garment from scratch using a commercial pattern. For beginners we suggest starting with something simple such as a skirt or basic pyjamas (for yourself or perhaps your children), and we can help in suggesting appropriate patterns and fabrics. Rachel will work with you, as a group and individually, to make your own unique garment. Rachel is happy to advise you on suitable patterns and fabrics. You must be prepared to do some sewing at home between sessions. This is a minimum Level 3 course (Sewing Skills Guidelines). You must know how to use your sewing machine, be confident in straight and zig-zag stitching, and able to rectify any tension problems. If you have not used your machine for more than a year we strongly recommend a refresher workshop before taking a dressmaking course. You are responsible for making sure your machine is in good working order. We can recommend people to service/repair your machine if required.

Please note, materials are NOT provided in this workshop – below is a list of materials you will need to bring with you.

You will need to bring:
your own sewing machine (including power cable) and the instruction book if possible. Your machine must be in full working order.
pattern (please ensure you buy a pattern based on your actual measurements, not your dress size, and don’t cut the pattern or fabric before the course begins). This is because pattern sizes are different to commercially produced clothing.
thread, zip etc. as required by the pattern (The Blue Room stocks basic haberdashery including zips, thread, and interfacing)

What do our customers say about our workshops?

What was the best thing about the workshop?

I am not very artistic , so it caters for all levels, and still the end product looks good. (Fused Glass, February 2018)

Really helpful teaching and nice small group. Loved it! (Claire, Beginners Machine Sewing January 2018)

Very enjoyable relaxed atmosphere, learning new techniques. (Jan, Weave Pattern and Texture on a Peg Loom, January 2018)

A good way to spend time with friends; the finished product; swishing around with my new skirt; learning how to use my sewing machine. (Mar, Darcy, Lizzie, and Isabella. January 2018, Children’s private group sewing)

Lovely relaxing thing to do in the build up to Christmas. (Claire, Fused Glass, December 2017)
