This is the perfect workshop for anyone who hasn’t yet made friends with their sewing machine or loves the idea of making things, but doesn’t quite know where to start. By bringing your machine to the workshop, we can be sure you will learn how to use the machine you will be working with at home. While all sewing machines look basically the same, different makes and models do some things quite differently, sometimes even catching out Rachel, which is why we ask you to bring the manual! This is a Level 1 workshop (please see our Sewing Skills Guidelines).
We will talk you through your machine’s basic functions and get you sewing with it as you make yourself a very lovely and environmentally friendly shopping bag. You’ll learn how to control your machine, stitch in a straight line, negotiate corners, juggle pins, and top stitch. You’ll also find out how to use the Zigzag stitch as both decoration and raw edge binding. Don’t worry if you think your machine doesn’t have a Zigzag stitch – most machines do even if it’s not obvious. There’ll be an ’emergency’ machine on hand if yours really doesn’t have it! You will also learn some basic fabric handling and cutting skills – all in all a great place to start!
All materials provided.
Based on our experience, machines that are over 20 years old and/or have not been used for several years are NOT suitable for this workshop. Also, if you bring a machine that is not in full working order we cannot guarantee you’ll be able to take part. We must ask you to take responsibility for ensuring the suitability and working order of your machine before the workshop.
About The Tutor: Rachel is a professional dressmaker, and has been teaching machine sewing and dressmaking at The Blue Room since we started our workshop programme. She has been passionate about sewing ever since she made a skirt at school aged 11. Since then she has been making beautiful clothes for all sorts of occasions, including her own wedding dress in 1981. Rachel loves working with quality fabrics and turning people’s ideas into the outfit they want for that special event. Apart from dresses, she will have a go at anything that requires the use of a sewing machine. You can see examples of Rachel’s work on her Facebook page here.
